Render vs a DigitalOcean server for app hosting

Run a backend on Render, which manages it for you, or on a DigitalOcean Droplet you run yourself: monthly cost at the same server size.

Updated · prices from each provider's own page

Render deploys a web app from GitHub without managing servers: you pick an instance size and Render runs, secures and updates it. A DigitalOcean Droplet is a blank Linux machine with a flat monthly price, and you run everything on it yourself. Render's free instance is not meant for production apps, so for a real app compare the paid sizes. Both are priced for a 1 GB server; change the size under Advanced in the builder.
